The Battle is Not Yours: A Reflection on 2 Chronicles 20:14-18

In the book of 2 Chronicles, chapter 20, verses 14-18, we find a powerful message of faith and surrender. This passage tells the story of Jahaziel, a Levite, who receives a divine message in the midst of a congregation. The Spirit of the Lord comes upon him, and he delivers a prophetic message to King Jehoshaphat and all of Judah and Jerusalem123.

The Divine Message

Jahaziel's message is clear: "Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's"4. This message is a reminder that when we face overwhelming odds, we are not alone. The battle we are fighting is not ours alone, but God's.

The Response of Faith

Upon hearing this message, King Jehoshaphat and all of Judah and Jerusalem respond in faith. They bow their heads and fall before the Lord, worshipping Him4. This act of worship is a powerful demonstration of their faith and trust in God's promise.

The Call to Stand Still

The people are instructed not to fight in this battle. Instead, they are told to "set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you"4. This command to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord is a call to trust in God's power and sovereignty.

Lessons for Today

This passage offers several lessons for us today. First, it reminds us that when we face challenges and difficulties, we should remember that the battle is not ours, but God's. We are not alone in our struggles; God is with us, fighting for us.

Second, it teaches us the importance of faith and surrender. When we trust in God and surrender our battles to Him, we can experience His peace and rest.

Finally, it calls us to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. Often, we try to fight our own battles and solve our own problems. But this passage reminds us to stop, stand still, and allow God to work on our behalf.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 20:14-18 is a powerful passage that reminds us of God's sovereignty, the importance of faith, and the power of surrender. As we face our own battles, may we remember that the battle is not ours, but God's, and may we learn to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.
